In recent years, we became too comfortable letting #Twitter define journalism & media. Algorithms often dictated the narratives we collectively paid attention to.
Absurd trends were covered by news outlets & ballooned into major stories while we missed so much real substance. And the quick takes of uninformed politicians & bad actors were forced upon anyone participating in the network.
It was bad for democracy. The #Mastodon model makes me hopeful we can do better. #twittermigration
I spoke about this a few days ago, but since there are so many new folks here: Mastodon has lists. And they're useful. You need to already be following people but you can put them into lists and then just call up that list. So, I have a list for journalists, and for tech law people. And it's super useful for me.
Unfortunately, lists are not currently public or shareable, though.
But test out the list feature to make Mastodon more useful.
FYI my personal enthusiasm for giving Mastodon a shot (and making sure folks understand it enough to try it if they want to) has not changed my opinion on this. It isn't going to be the new Twitter because there won't be a new Twitter. π’ https://theconversation.com/mass-migration-from-twitter-is-likely-to-be-an-uphill-battle-just-ask-ex-tumblr-users-193677

βI have been working very, very hard to push the idea that there is a better way to do social media than what the commercial companies like Twitter and Facebook allow.β #Mastodon #TwitterMigration #SocialNetworks #Twitter #ElonMusk #EugenRochko
