The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers

Lauren Collins writes about Stéphane Bourgoin, who became famous through his jailhouse interviews with murderers. Then an anonymous collective of true-crime fans began investigating his own story.

In this video, TED-Ed does a really good job of explaining how the oil industry has interfered with climate science and has sabotaged meaningful change for decades in order to sustain themselves at all costs (literally). 🛢️🌎

We wouldn't make Gay Couples a cake, and that's people's right to refuse service, but how dare anyone refuse us a Subway Sandwich!

The Democratic Party is about to run a Black, South Asian woman
against a white supremacist former president.

It’s about to run a person whose parents were immigrants
against a xenophobe who supports mass deportations.

It’s about to run a woman who prosecuted sexual predators
against a sexual predator who has been judged to be a rapist.

And it’s about to run a fierce defender of reproductive rights
against a person who proudly claims responsibility for overturning Roe v. Wade

Beware the People Who Claim “America Isn’t Ready for a Black Woman President”

Even as Kamala Harris consolidates the entire Democratic Party behind her campaign, there will be people telling her she can’t win because she’s a woman of color.

The Nation

A gentle reminder when talking about about the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, from someone who doesn't talk politics here:

Referring to someone by their last name is generally a sign of respect. Referring to someone by their first name is generally a sign of intimacy. Consider how people have referred, in short form, to other nominees and Presidents:

Bush, Clinton, Gore, Bush, Kerry, Obama, Romney, McCain, Biden, Trump

And then

Hillary and Kamala

See a pattern?

Saying it now - we'll call this the Covid games. These variants ripping through the world, elevating cases to near records, will decimate teams and audiences.

The denialism and utter contempt to what Covid can and will do to athletes should be criminal. Only 2 weeks ago the Tour de France belatedly introduced measures to protect riders.

Enraging: ''but I need to emphasize we are treating Covid no different to other bugs like flu'

Mastodon for Harris has surpassed $40,000 raised, with 600 contributions ranging from $1 to significantly more. I have increased the goal to $45,000 - considered $50,000 but I hardly dare to think we could raise that in under two days.

The boosts and posts spreading the word are so helpful. And thanks non-U.S. friends and followers for tolerating all the U.S. politics in their feeds.

Spectacular meditation on why AI “art” feels so utterly dead and soulless, by @pluralistichttps://pluralistic.net/2024/07/20/ransom-note-force-field/

This is one my favorite type of essays — Cory pulls together inflection-moments from aesthetic transitions decades ago (MySpace, desktop publishing, punk zines), and concepts from domains entirely outside of aesthetics, to illuminate why AI creations feel so resonantly hollow
