Why is this 747 flying with a massive doorway that is open? There’s a telescope inside!

SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, was a Boeing 747SP used by NASA to study space while flying in the stratosphere. The 100 inch (2.5m) reflector telescope (visible in the second photo) could pick up infrared light better than ground-based telescopes. SOFIA’s last “official” flight was at the Aerospace Valley Airshow at Edwards Air Force Base in October 2022. #space #nasa #avgeek
