The ‘Intellectual Dark Web’ and the long history of right-wing rebranding

For nearly a century, Republicans have been pretending to be the ‘real liberals’

Consequently, the only reaction they can fathom is to concoct a way to hurt the feelings of everyone who isn't aligned with them. To do so, they'll abuse the law, institutions, traditions as props in the all-important theatrical production they're writing as a retort to the latest act they tried and failed to prevent. Don't waste your time trying to convince them that reality exists or matters. (2/2)
If you want to understand what's going on in #maga world right now, you first have to realize that to these people, every aspect of public life is mere political theatre, and that political theatre is the only public reality. They don't believe in truth, the law, democracy. They're convinced everyone who isn't aligned with them is conspiring to get them, and NY cooked up a fake conviction to hurt their feelings. (1/2)
He doesn't give a damn. He thinks he should be allowed to be a partisan hack that everyone has to treat as an impartial oracle. The man is corrupt to the bone and half of the branch of government responsible fo holding him accountable loves it and loves that no one can do anything about it because of them.
Another Maggie Haberman NYT Story Covers Up Oleg Deripaska's Role - emptywheel

NYT and other media outlets are burying the truly scandalous details of Trump's willingness (and second thoughts) about bringing Paul Manafort back onto a campaign role: his role (witting or not) in Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

@Teri_Kanefield If traditional legislation is required, that would create the seemingly absurd result that Biden could engage in insurrection today, and veto a bill that passes both chambers declaring him ineligible for reelection in November under section 3.
@Teri_Kanefield As you read the ruling, is SCOTUS requiring traditional legislation (bill signed into law) to enact section 3? I can't find that clearly stated in the main opinion (only references about how that's the case for section 5), but the concurrences seem to act as though the majority said that. I'm particularly interested to know if other Congressional actions would suffice, such as a decision during the joint session to certify the electoral certificates.
@Teri_Kanefield I have been assuming for some time now that Russians are involved in amplifying the arguments over whether or not Israel's actions in Gaza constitute a genocide and whether criticism of Israel is antisemitic. These are perfect wedge issues to fracture the Democratic coalition for the benefit of Republicans, and the Russians would honestly be stupid not to try to capitalize, given their interests and given how easy Musk has made this kind of interference on X.
@gwynnion True. However, when a R is in the WH, rightwing media talks ceaselessly about how great the economy is and the mainstream media largely backs it up. When a D is in the WH, rightwing media talks ceaselessly about how terrible the economy is and the MSM finds a way to constantly highlight the negative, or attach conditionals to the positive, to justify the way Rs are "feeling." Remains true even when the economy under a D outperforms the economy under an R.
@Teri_Kanefield Don't be fooled by the vocal contingent of responders. You are one of my favorite follows in the history of social media and the only reason I still check Mastadon. I just don't like to slop around in the mud pit of the comments section anywhere. I'm sure there are more like me. Keep fighting the good fight.
