i support research-based science, oxford commas, romance novels, snark, democratic norms, paper ballots, and many other things. oh, & lots of cussing

so, friends, can you see who's on a federated instance (am i using that correctly?) without joining that server? like if i see that a bunch of people i interacted with elsewhere are on one server, but i'm happy with the server i'm on, can i poke around on that other server to follow several people at once?

gah, i'm not phrasing this very well.

@bandherbooks as a reader, i've greatly expanded the diversity of my reading as well as the devotion of my author following. before, i casually liked some authors. now, i want to know their general politics before i give them my money, and then i want to give them all the money i can if i like their books because i want to support them to keep writing more! maybe some people don't think twitter sells books, but i've sure spent a lot of money because of it, haha!
@Oldandcranky oh, that's always so hard! good luck at keeping it under wraps until getting the go ahead!

So I guess it wasn't a hoax.

GOP operative Jesse Benton found guilty of funneling Russian money to Donald Trump's campaign.

(I was being sarcastic. I already knew it wasn't a hoax)

GOP operative found guilty of funneling Russian money to Donald Trump

A longtime Ron Paul aide helped a Russian businessman get into a Trump fundraiser; Trump later pardoned him for another campaign finance crime.

@Z0phn we used to eat out a lot (too much?), but since 2020, we've only done take-away or outdoor dining. not perfect, but it's a hopefully safe(r) compromise that allows us to see friends & family. we're in texas, usa, so lots of restaurants have outdoor/patio seating. would be harder in places that don't.
i want to do more, then another wave comes & hospitals fill up, and it seems like a choice between long covid; serious illness; or going out, & going out doesn't sound as good then
@prehensile apparently they're super unimportant but also crash a lot of critical services like 2FA. no big deal!

Maybe you saw the news today that a Twitter engineer got fired by Elon, over Twitter.

I talked to him.

Hours have gone by and he's still had no messaging from the company.

He doesn't even know where to send his company laptop.

@Z0phn we got back in march 2020 before vaccines, and we've been exposed peripherally by required maintenance calls in our house or needed errands, but we never stopped masking & still mostly only do things outdoor or with only small groups of others who are vaxxed. maybe it'd be different if i didn't have kids, but i do, and i don't want my legacy to them to be orphans with heart & lung problems before adulthood.
@BuggsMcGhee oh, no, that's terrible!!! i'm so sorry to hear that. i hope it's of short duration for all the best reasons (every body gets well quickly & gets to go home safely).
