Routine PSA: #Mozilla will shut down #Pocket on October 8th and delete all user data. You have a week left to request an export of your archive.

(My first request returned a corrupt file, so I'm going for a second round now. Fingers crossed).

Another slimeball location-data company sells your doctor visits to the police. Grotesque and dangerous contempt for privacy -- and women in red states will surely become prime targets.

Burn this industry to the ground, I'd say, but Congress would have to act, and Congress is hostile to your privacy.

Fine reporting, as usual, from @404mediaco

Location Data Firm Offers to Help Cops Track Targets via Doctor Visits

Fog Data Science is a location tracking company that takes data harvested from smartphones and makes it accessible to cops. A document obtained by 404 Media shows the company explicitly says it will use doctors visits to unmask a target if needed.

I'm a bit sad that last.fm isn't more popular. To preempt, yes, it's still a centralized commercial company, but at least it's agnostic about where you listen to music. Instead, most people have their listening habits locked within specific streaming platforms like Spotify or YouTube Music, and rely on them to make that information available to them once a year...

Massive e-learning platform Udemy is training its AI on instructors' classes. It gave them a short "opt-out" window to reject this. Instructors are surprised to learn that time has passed.

I really hope the fediverse can get more traction among “normies”. But one thing I have been wondering is why the community on Bluesky (which I think is also part of the fediverse?) is so much worse than Mastodon?

I’ve received more hate and harassment on Bluesky than Twitter. The people are truly awful on that app, but every time Musk does something usage balloons. I don’t understand why people jump to Bluesky when Mastodon is here and so much better imo!
