I'm a bit sad that last.fm isn't more popular. To preempt, yes, it's still a centralized commercial company, but at least it's agnostic about where you listen to music. Instead, most people have their listening habits locked within specific streaming platforms like Spotify or YouTube Music, and rely on them to make that information available to them once a year...
I've been using last.fm since 2008 and the only device in my possession that isn't scrobbling is the record player. It is a bit amusing that for how privacy-conscious I am in all other ways I'm happy to share what I listen to, when, and how much. But that's the thing, it's my choice.
@Gargron I think music listening is one of those inherently social (and also personal) activities. It's a good fit for a social web update actually!

@Gargron My argument for using Last.fm is that the data collection is not only consensual, but a conscious effort.

Besides, my data privacy techniques mean that my Last.fm activity can't be tied to my other browsing activity, so ad tracking is almost impossible. Besides, if it gets used for analytics or AI training or whatever, worst case scenario big tech gets a better taste in music.

@Gargron nice! I join in 2005! Sad the pro price jumped recently.
@Gargron You know what, I scrobble my record player too! :) This is a great app for that, but I think there are a few others that do the same. It uses the Discogs database to find your vinyl records and lets you scrobble them. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/discographic-for-discogs/id979196369
‎Discographic for Discogs

@onuryasar I use Marvis Pro to scrobble my CD and SACD listening, but that is a great feature for a Discogs app!
@Galley Yes, same. I use Marvis Pro with Apple Music, that’s an amazing app. Not just scrobbling but all the customisations you can make to the playlists and views.
@Gargron I should note that the MusicBrainz folks have been working on a community driven site - https://listenbrainz.org - as an alternative, for folks whose concern is the commercial nature of the last.fm service.

@kepstin @Gargron And you can import your last.fm history, which is a big plus!
@Gargron I‘m absolutely the same. But I’m willing to accept a little less privacy for the ability to look back at my listening history of the last decade!!
@Gargron Yes, early adopter of Last.fm here too. Simpler times.
@Gargron couldn't you get them to support ActivityPub? 😁
@Gargron yeah still love last.fm as the one true source of listening stats. I looked into methods for scrobbling vinyl, and ended up using either Discographic app (if you use Discogs) or https://openscrobbler.com, which is manual, but really quick and easy.
Open Scrobbler

Scrobble songs and albums you heard on the radio, vinyl or at some place where you need to manually scrobble.

@Gargron I tested loads of “automated” options but they all rely on Shazam, and end up with too many false matches https://hicks.design/journal/analog-scrobbling
Analog Scrobbling - Hicks.design

I've been looking for a way to scrobble analog music such as vinyl to last.fm, so that my listening statistics are complete.

@Gargron thanks for the reminder. I started using it in 2007, found my way back in today and see I last scrobbled in 2019. Most of the folks I was following stopped around the same time. Well, I'm using it again now, so thanks for the prompt.
@Gargron I spent a lot of last year retrieving my music from youtube, where it found itself after google play closed down. I'm now using ibroadcast which holds my music without trying to sell me anything. Highly recommended, and yes it does scrobble.

@Gargron Long time Last.fm user, scrobbled from WinAmp back in the day, now iTunes (I know) and Spotify (I know). Never could get scrobbling for my iPod to work properly, all it did was brick iTunes.

It presents me with more accurate stats on my listening, unlike Mr Ek's green machine.

@Gargron same. i've been on google music since the day it started, but I pay for Kagi search. music has always been an outlier. i want all the data brokers to analyze me and say "whew, very eclectic!!"
@Gargron I scrobble to libre.fm .Open source clone of last.fm with nearly the same API.

@Gargron Last.fm was great - I used it back when it was called AudioScrobbler - but it got sold to CBS and a lot of the core people that made the service left for new pastures.

They went for a long time without updating anything on the site. It’s been getting some updates the past few years, which is nice to see.

I’ve been a Pro member since is was possible. 🥹

@Gargron Agreed, I've been using it since 2006 and made use of their API to report on my listening habits.
@Gargron I agree. I have all my scrobbles since 2008. Lack of scrobbling support is the reason I haven’t given Apple Music a try, it’s a dealbreaker for me.
@eljojo Lots of scrobblers have Apple Music support
@RiSK from the official apple music app? like, with apple watch support and all the bells and whistles that come with apple music? — AFAIK Apple has no API that allows to scrobble as seamless as Spotify does.
@RiSK @eljojo The Marvis.app does
@martinv @RiSK while that's true, the Marvis.app does not seem capable of removing songs from your library. I'm skeptic of the idea that 3rd parties can provide a better "Apple Music" experience than Apple itself.
@eljojo @Gargron there are very effective apps on iOS and macOS now that scrobble Apple Music. I use Sleeve on macOS, and Marvis on iOS
@Gargron this is really sad. It has become very difficult to scrobble how it used to work in the days.
@tsueri @Gargron I tend to disagree!! You can get a browser extension that'll scrobble YouTube, soundcloud, Bandcamp, etc. Spotify (at least for now...) still lets you log in, and the majority of local music players I've used have a plugin that scrobble for you. It's just that people stopped using last.fm proper for... Some reason? I think having easy playlist sharing made it so the focus kind of wasn't about the conversation/curation and more about the ease of consumption

@wexx @Gargron I've been using iTunes for al long time. It just worked with last.fm. If I remember correctly, it even synced my scrobbles form my iPhone, when synced with iTunes. This is not working anymore.

Sorry, for the late reply.

@tsueri @Gargron ah weird, must've been something with the iTunes -> Apple music move 😭
@Gargron it's funny you mention this, I actually mentioned Last.FM in one of my answers after my #RubyWorld talk! I've been using it for many years. It seemed to have a heyday about 15 years ago. I still use it across various listening services.
@Gargron I didn't realize this was still a thing! Thanks for pointing it out; I was a big fan around 2006-08, maybe (I remember the name change...)? New weekend project unlocked: time to reconnect with this platform.

@Gargron

I used to use Last.fm a lot and loved it. But then when it got brought out by big capitalism they took the music off the website and partnered with sharing Spotify links instead. Made music discovery a lot harder with it and I quit.

@monkeyben If you elect racists don't be shocked when they enact racist policies.
@Gargron I always thought last.fm could have blossomed into a music-taste-centered social network with the right vision. It had a mighty network of users way before facebook took off. Instead the founders flogged it off to CBS who had no idea how to develop it (or were not willing to put the cash in to try), it seems. A real shame, glad it's still around though - I love it.

@Gargron I'd completely forgotten about them. I apparently last used it in 2013. 🙂 They still recognized my account though. Got signed in and am now 'scrobbling' my Bandcamp plays.

It'll be interesting to see what artists they suggest after a few days.

@Gargron I continue to like it. I use Apple Music which is bad at scribbling, but Marvis Pro scribbles anything I listen to on my iPhone. Listening on any other device doesn’t work great though. Sometimes third-party scribblers will pick it up, sometimes no.
@ehler @Gargron Mavis Pro is great for scrobbling albums you listen to on CD. 😄
@ehler I too use (and love) Marvis Pro on iOS and iPadOS. Also, I’ve been successfully using NepTunes on macOS to scrobble, if it helps. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/neptunes-for-itunes-spotify/id1006739057?mt=12

@Gargron I don't understand people's obsession with tracking their own listening habits.
@markstoneman @Gargron How else will people know that I have listened to The Monkees more than 11,000 times? 😜 #TheMonkees

@Gargron 100%! It is the service I’ve used for the longest time in my life. I had a last.fm account since 2005, before any of the current “social media” existed.
@Gargron Cool let me check out last.fm BOOM
@Gargron @senan its time for funk.pub to have its time
@Gargron Wow. I forgot about last.fm. I had an account back in the day. I might have to give it a try again.
@Gargron memory-flash/ssd/hdd >

@Gargron I don't use streaming services except my own by ripping CDs into FLAC and scrobbling them to last.fm and listenbrainz simultaneously. People care about convenience over almost any other consideration though, and that's why we are where we are when it comes to a lot of things.
@Gargron After many years as a Pro user I decided to cancel :( the price spike was too harsh for the type of value I am getting. Still really like the platform
@Gargron I used last.fm all the time when it was effectively a Spotify competitor and I could stream music directly through it, I loved its recommendations. But it lost something when it became just a record of what you listened to.
@Gargron I never used it… @ListenBrainz is all I ever needed for scrobbling! 💕
@Gargron been scrobbling since 2005 (actually visited their offices back in the day, cool folks) and use their API (especially useful as Spotify just slammed a bunch of theirs shut with no warning). Wish it was better supported by CBS, but I guess hard to justify spending money on it. https://www.last.fm/user/Offbeatmammal

@Gargron 528,032 scrobbles and counting! 😄

@Gargron fwiw spotify is quite a letdown when it comes to detailing what you've been listening to during the entire year; I have noticed while trying to scrape together all 2024 releases I've indulged myself into.

last.fm remains king
