Why is it that a pay rise for a teacher causes inflation, but a bonus for a banker doesn't?

Interestingly, if you go to the law and scroll down on the same page, you'll see the other statutory provision where they limit the TsySec's authority to mint coins based on what the Federal Reserve decides is appropriate.

jk jk, there's nothing of the sort.

Strikes me that arguments over whether structural racism "caused" this or that event mirror arguments over whether climate change "caused" this or that event.

Wrote about that way back in 2012. https://grist.org/climate-change/did-climate-change-cause-the-colorado-wildfires/

Did climate change ’cause’ the Colorado wildfires?

The question of whether climate change "causes" certain events drives David Roberts a little nuts, but he tries to tackle it once and for all.

Most people intuitively understand this difference, but lots of the discourse around both climate change & structural racism involves people pretending you're talking about proximal causation when you're talking about distal causation.

Oh wait, one other note. Earlier in the piece: "To my mind, the role and responsibility of a columnist is to always write what you think."

Let me just suggest that a prior responsibility, in line before "write what you think," is ***inform yourself about your subject***.

I find this so frustrating. America's ignorance & neglect toward public transit long predate the push for EVs, so how on earth could the push for EVs be *responsible* for it?

One of the most significant costs to Biden of the documents case is the opportunity cost: Democrats will now have a hard time using Trump's mishandling of classified papers against him, even though the particulars of the two cases are markedly different.

Biden’s Handling of Secret Documents Complicates the Case Against Trump

The cases are markedly different in their particulars. But they are similar enough that as a practical matter, Democrats will have a hard time using the issue against former President Donald J. Trump.
