Teacher of software engineering with too many hobbies

Three keys to being a great teacher:

1. Have students who are safe and well nourished, not victims of systemic discrimination, and live in supportive home environments.

2. Work in an educational system that has stable long-term funding and is administered by people who respect your professional expertise.

3. Ignore people who put all the responsibility for being a great teacher on you rather than saying that collective action to achieve #1 and #2 are what will actually make a difference.

That means that the size of Wikipedia has now surpassed the size of the Hitchhikers’s Guide to the Galaxy.

By now, I thought everyone knew the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, the doctor who tried to get his colleagues to wash their hands in the 1840s. Not only did they refuse to listen, they decided he was crazy. They had him committed to an asylum. He died there. Semmelweis understood
