“It’s a bit like seeing a rabbit shape in the clouds and then testing whether all clouds look like rabbits… using the same cloud. I hope you appreciate that you’re going to need some new clouds to test your theory.

Any datapoint you use to inspire a theory or question can’t be used to test that same theory.”

The most powerful idea in data science - Towards Data Science

If you take an introductory statistics course, you’ll learn that a datapoint can be used to generate inspiration or to test a theory, but never both. Why not? Humans are a bit too good at finding…

Towards Data Science
You can now download my free textbook using the download menu button as a 500 page (!) pdf file, or an epub version https://lakens.github.io/statistical_inferences/. But: I consider the html book the main version (with interactive assignments, gifs, shiny apps) so if the pdf is not 100% correct, I probably won't fix it.
Improving Your Statistical Inferences

This open educational resource contains information to improve statistical inferences, design better experiments, and report scientific research more transparently.

For now, I believe that #ChatGPT (free version) is good for obtaining information and insights on topics with which one is familiar, so as to be able to promptly identify inconsistencies in the response. Otherwise, the risk of mistaking hallucinations for reality is very high.
