Just finished Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam. Just amazed by how much data and surveys American sociologists have recorded over the years.

I wonder how the recently circulating "Europe Inflation drivers" paper by IMF got their results.

Paper : https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/WP/Issues/2023/06/23/Euro-Area-Inflation-after-the-Pandemic-and-Energy-Shock-Import-Prices-Profits-and-Wages-534837

Would be great if I could apply their methodology to the cases of Lebanon's hyperinflation or Egypt's (official) 40% inflation. The situation here is far more dire and nobody is giving us reasons other than "Ukraine conflict"
But I'm fully aware of the IMF's problematic history, so I'll proceed with caution.

Euro Area Inflation after the Pandemic and Energy Shock: Import Prices, Profits and Wages

We document the importance of import prices and domestic profits as a counterpart to the recent increase in euro area inflation. Through a novel consumption deflator decomposition, we show that import prices account for 40 percent of the average change in the consumption deflator over 2022Q1 – 2023Q1, while domestic profits account for 45 percent. The increase in nominal profits was largest in sectors benefiting from increasing international commodity prices and those exposed to recent supply-demand mismatches. While the results show that firms have passed on more than the nominal cost shock, and have fared relatively better than workers, the limited available data does not point to a widespread increase in markups. Looking ahead, assuming nominal wage growth of around 4.5 percent over 2023-24 – slightly below the level seen in Q1 2023 – and broadly unchanged productivity, a normalization of the profit share to the average level over 2015-19 will be necessary to achieve a convergence of inflation to target over the next two years. Monetary policy will thus need to remain restrictive to anchor expectations and maintain subdued demand such that workers and firms settle on relative price setting that is consistent with disinflation.

Christopher Alexander was like a glitch in the matrix, an incredibly talented architect who's down to earth and appreciative of usually unnoticed craftsmanship, to the point of bringing carpenters and masonry workers into the pristine lecture halls of architecture schools to teach students about their importance. God rest his soul.

As people have exponentially more surplus for luxury and extravagance, they spend exponentially more on luxury and extravagance.

-Some luxuries become essential by the virtue of necessity, mostly to be sheltered from inconveniences, as private transportation and security.
-Some are purely spent to avoid social appearance anxiety, or cultivating admiration and likeability.
-Some for personal joy, fears and egomania.

Before #TwitterExodus there was a #Facebook one. I'm excited about the migration of mostly progressive activists & journalists, but what about the rest of the people? Facebook migration might give us a clue; it became an echo chamber for disinformation and far-right influencers. Social media (especially Twitter & FB) is the leading and fastest-growing source of news consumption. The path of least resistance for the vast majority of FB users was to keep using it, will Twitter be any different?
