The benefits of digitising books, manuscripts and other relevant material

After five years of working on making literature available on public domain through digitisation, Servants of Knowledge, a Bengaluru-based community initiative, held its first meeting with city residents. The panel of experts at the meeting included Carl Malamud, an American technologist who runs Public.Resource.Org since the 1980s; Lawrence Liang, dean of the Ambedkar University School of Law; and Omshivaprakash H L, an open access advocate who co-founded the Servants of Knowledge initiative.

I just had to update my numbers for a lecture, so here's your periodic reminder: Starlink is now 55% of ALL active satellites in orbit.

And given the recent news about that awful billionaire unilaterally deciding to cut of Starlink internet access to parts of the world whenever he wants to, this is extra important to share. Why did our governments effectively gift Low Earth Orbit to one awful dude? This is so bad.

Interesting to see Flipboard getting into the ActivityPub protocol. This article from Flipboard's CEO has a good explanation of their rationale and an overview of their roadmap. I'm willing to cut them some slack because they have a lot of work ahead of them to get their new way of handling content and messages implemented fully. I don't have a stake in this (haven't used Flipboard in years) but think it's interesting to observe social media, content publishers, and other companies realising a "walled garden" approach is unsustainable and improving interoperability.
