I guess I should expand on that... Pretend there are two links to a 5MB file, and on one link a 1MB extra is added to it.
Regular link: Both links now link to a 6MB file, the 5MB original is gone.
Reflinks: A new copy is created for the edited link, disk use goes from 5MB to 11MB.
COW dedup: The 5MB file gets a 1MB addendum that is loaded in when it's called from that specific link only.
