OK, in the Southern Literary Messenger (March 1841), Severn Teakle Wallis penned a lengthy and detailed exposition of the injustice he believed Irving and his American admirers did to Navarrete and Spain. This piece should be taught with Dana, Emerson, etc in histories of American literature.

Actually, I suppose it’s mistranscription, not mistranslation.
I thought the early music and naval historian folks out there would both enjoy this bit of mistranslation by the astronomer Franz Xaver von Zach, commenting in 1823 on Drake's 1587 burning of the Spanish fleet at Cadiz.
Can folks in the know tell me how LLM builders measure the “capability” and “smartness” of their models? How do they derive these from volume of training data and processing power?
