#Americanists: in the preface to the 2nd edition (1850) of his Life of #Columbus, Washington Irving rebuts "an American writer" who accused him of failing to credit Navarrete adequately. Anyone know who that American writer was?
OK, in the Southern Literary Messenger (March 1841), Severn Teakle Wallis penned a lengthy and detailed exposition of the injustice he believed Irving and his American admirers did to Navarrete and Spain. This piece should be taught with Dana, Emerson, etc in histories of American literature.
