George McGavin and Museum researcher Leonidas-Romanos Davranoglou have recently published the second edition of Essential Entomology. This book is accessible introduction to entomology for anyone interested in the natural world.

This book is meant to be accessible to everyone. Undergraduate students in biology, forestry, and agriculture will find this a particularly helpful read. It will also be particularly enjoyable for naturalists and entomology hobbyists.

In our new display case ‘Life and Water’ you can explore the world of the deepest oceans. There are some unique items in this case including three deep-sea vent chimneys. When super-heated mineral rich waters rise to meet cold water the sulfide mineral deposits solidify and form chimneys home to some of the planet’s most incredible forms of life.

In this case you can see things like the deep-sea mussels which lived alongside out black smoker vent chimney at 1700m below the oceans surface.

At the top of the inscription in a visibly different hand is the name ‘Frances Wallace’ and ‘Frances Sims’. The inscription discusses how Frances closed the book and told the spirits to write her name, and ‘Frances Wallace’ appeared. She then closed the book again and asked for her married name which is when ‘Frances Sims’ appeared. Spooky!
This was Wallace’s sister’s copy of ‘Scientific Aspect of the Supernatural’ which explores Wallace’s interest in clairvoyants and mediums published n 1866. What is unique about this copy is that not only does it contains a letter written by Wallace’s sister Frances, but also allegedly a ghostly entry.

What do Alfred Russel Wallace, his sister, and spirits have to do with the Museum?

This week was the 200th anniversary of Alfred Russel Wallace’s birth, the man who independently came up with the idea of evolution concurrently with Charles Darwin. But today also happens to be Friday the 13th!

These findings shed light on the early evolutionary history of the megadiverse dipteran lineage, which has more than 125000 species described, and the ecology of their immature forms.

The fossils discussed in this paper are all of immature insects including: a larva, a pupae, and an egg cluster. While these examples of immature life stages are not uncommon in the fossil evidence, there is a lack of example in before the Middle Triassic.

The fossilised larva studied here lived in terrestrial areas near water pools, which provide valuable insight into insect colonisation of Triassic aquatic ecosystems, and show its respiratory system in exquisite detail.

A team of researchers, including the Museum’s own Dr. Perez-de la Fuente, recently described the oldest currently known fossils of the insect group Diptera (including true flies, midges, mosquitoes, etc.) from the Triassic of Mallorca (Spain), about 247 million years ago.
