The #AiAct negotiations are now hinging on some wild suggestions from EU Member states about AI-powered surveillance. We cannot let bans on biometric categorization, emotion recognition, and real-time biometric identification be compromised further! https://eupolicy.social/@euractiv_tech/111539935938194771

OTI is going to be hosting a Google Policy Fellow in the fall. I was part of the program twice (with GNI and IEF) and I am very much a big booster of it, so if you're a student in the US, APPLY NOW (specifically to join us at OTI!)!

A non-portability piece from me, this one on the big picture impacts of today's AI boom: https://techpolicy.press/past-present-future-ai-geopolitics-and-the-global-economy/

In it, I argue we need to be paying more attention to two future timelines: 1) AI's ability to catalyze American industrial leadership; and 2) the risk that AI will further undermine post-WWII international order.

Read to the end, where you can see the roots of all of this in developments from the 1950s!

It was a pleasure to work with @justinhendrix at Tech Policy Press, as always.

Past, Present, Future: AI, Geopolitics, and the Global Economy

AI’s role in shaping the future of US industry and the international world order may well prove to be its biggest legacy, says Chris Riley.

Forgot to mention it originally: a few months ago, with some amazing thinkers from across the Americas, I participated in a research clinic on platforms and democracy hosted by two fantastic German institutions (HBI & HIIG) & lead by @matthiaskettemann. The report for our clinic and the rest of the world is here (specifically my piece on why enforcement is crucial): https://graphite.page/platform-democracy-report/#heading-505

Last week, with Prem Trivedi, wrote a piece for Tech Policy Press about what the White House Voluntary Commitments on #AI would need to be actually useful besides being a messaging experiment: https://techpolicy.press/how-tech-companies-can-make-recent-ai-commitments-count/
How Tech Companies Can Make Recent AI Commitments Count

Voluntary commitments on AI run the risk of falling short, say David Morar and Prem Trivedi from New America’s Open Technology Institute.

This past week, I was quoted in the Daily Dot, in a great piece by Ben Brody about civil rights protections in last year’s comprehensive federal #privacy bill (aka #ADPPA).

Inside the behind-the-scenes push civil rights groups are making on Capitol Hill to pass data privacy laws

Leading civil rights groups are working to ensure Congress' big data privacy bill makes its way to President Joe Biden's desk.

#introduction
I’m a tech policy researcher and practitioner with a lot of affiliations, in and out of academia.

My academic focus is governance, looking at hybrid (private, co-regulatory, self-governance etc) structures with specific expertise on #multistakeholder governance and emerging tech.

My real world work is varied, mainly privacy, platform governance/free speech issues, disinfo, ethics of AI, and others.

Currently a Senior Policy Analyst @ New America’s OTI, prev postdoc @ NYU.
