Last night’s Carly Rae Jepsen concert in NYC was cancelled after 3 songs because of ⚡️! 2 hours later, impromptu small show at Rockwood Music Hall, where she and her band played three 30 minute sets (on borrowed instruments) so that the almost 450 people in line (including me) can all enjoy it, 150 at a time. Today, the rescheduled full show from last night was an entirely joyful affair! If you have the chance, see her live, it’s a truly wonderful experience!
Forgot to mention it originally: a few months ago, with some amazing thinkers from across the Americas, I participated in a research clinic on platforms and democracy hosted by two fantastic German institutions (HBI & HIIG) & lead by @matthiaskettemann. The report for our clinic and the rest of the world is here (specifically my piece on why enforcement is crucial): https://graphite.page/platform-democracy-report/#heading-505

Last week, with Prem Trivedi, wrote a piece for Tech Policy Press about what the White House Voluntary Commitments on #AI would need to be actually useful besides being a messaging experiment: https://techpolicy.press/how-tech-companies-can-make-recent-ai-commitments-count/
How Tech Companies Can Make Recent AI Commitments Count

Voluntary commitments on AI run the risk of falling short, say David Morar and Prem Trivedi from New America’s Open Technology Institute.

Just got my first cr*pto scam DM on mastodon.
This past week, I was quoted in the Daily Dot, in a great piece by Ben Brody about civil rights protections in last year’s comprehensive federal #privacy bill (aka #ADPPA).
https://www.dailydot.com/debug/civil-rights-data-privacy-congress/
Inside the behind-the-scenes push civil rights groups are making on Capitol Hill to pass data privacy laws

Leading civil rights groups are working to ensure Congress' big data privacy bill makes its way to President Joe Biden's desk.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but platform accountability is downstream from privacy, especially in terms of legislation.
Out today in @lawfare, a piece co-authored with Bruna Martins, on the EU's Digital Services Act, what makes it special, and if can become a de facto standard in platform governance. https://www.lawfareblog.com/dsa-new-dawn-legislating-platform-governance-globally
Is the DSA a New Dawn of Legislating Platform Governance Globally?

Is the EU’s new Digital Services Act the path forward for platform governance legislation in other parts of the world?

More troubles on this birdsite today. For anyone who wants to join a tech policy mastodon instance, I'm now running http://techpolicy.social. I'm gatekeeping invites for now, but if you follow me here and work in tech or tech policy, feel free to join!
Mastodon

#introduction
I’m a tech policy researcher and practitioner with a lot of affiliations, in and out of academia.

My academic focus is governance, looking at hybrid (private, co-regulatory, self-governance etc) structures with specific expertise on #multistakeholder governance and emerging tech.

My real world work is varied, mainly privacy, platform governance/free speech issues, disinfo, ethics of AI, and others.

Currently a Senior Policy Analyst @ New America’s OTI, prev postdoc @ NYU.

here's a free tip for all the #TwitterMigration people:

mastodon ONLY has text search for your toots, and the toots of people you follow, nothing beyond that, so you MUST use hashtags for others to be able to find things you post. And don't be afraid to use them, unlike the hellsite, mastodon doesn't limit your reach in any way based on how many hashtags or links you use in your posts :)

and there's an edit button too
