what's happening to Twitter right now is exactly why tech needs unions. it's not to protect our jobs or to make more money, but to have a say in the direction of the production of our labor. the point is to have power and use it for ends we believe in

Recently a good number of #AndroidDev have started the migration here and it would be cool to have an instance focused on #Android. But I know each of these people are interesting in ways outside of Android as well and should be encouraged to post about those things too.

How does that generally work in the #fediverse?

Are people expected to use multiple accounts? I would hope not.

So with #Mastodon I am drawn to the instances that I think my posts will not disrupt the experience. Some instances are described as having focuses like tech, photography, etc.

As a person, I will potentially want to post about many things. Is this widely accepted even in those focused instances?

This is hard to tell as a newcomer and why I think most (including me) favor starting with the major/generalist, instances.

You know how most people just have one phone number?

That's possible because all phone providers in the world federate together. No matter which provider you use, you can call anyone anywhere.

Well, Mastodon (and the Fediverse it's a part of) is the same thing but for social media. The Fediverse address on your profile is enough for people on other servers to follow you and interact with you. It looks like this:

@ (username) @ (server)

There's a video about it here:

What is the Fediverse?
