Every academic should be able to write code, write a book, engage in critical theory, design an experiment, talk for 5 minutes, talk for an hour, do education research, chair a committee, take orders from a committee, know physics, know history, know linguistics, appreciate literature, talk students down from doing stupid stuff, run a budget, use Word, use LaTeX, use a shared drive, build a website, coordinate a 25-man-deep phalanx, run a book seminar, run a lab. Specialisation is for insects.
@adrishaw uncanny 😨
My latest publication, part of the the "What is cultural studies?" series in the International Journal of Cultural Studies, is now online: "Video games as cultural studies other" (note: requires library access to the journal): https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13678779241295771
Haven’t checked in here for a bit. How are we doing?
Last semester was possibly the busiest in my life. I learned a lot. Negative things aside, a lot about myself, my ethics and my politics. The plan for Spring 2025 is to focus more narrowly on academia and get that one article submitted to a journal.

A huge thank you to organisers, session chairs and other presenters for all the efforts that are making it possible to participate in #AoIR2024 remotely. Choosing between the 3 remote parallel sessions is so difficult, can't imagine what I would be going through if I was actually in Sheffield 🤯 Seriously though this kind of accessibility makes a difference especially to scholars in the global south. Thanks so much.
@emma i feel like the idea is good but separating it by location runs the risk of urban centers receiving more aid (where they probably already do) and smaller instances for regional/rural locations being underdeveloped and less noticeable. maybe?
