The Battle Over Chat Control: How EU Governments and the Tech Lobby Are Trying to Overturn Parliament's Vote — A Comprehensive Fact Check

This week, the European Parliament faces a decisive vote on whether the indiscriminate scanning of private chats and emails by US tech companies (Chat Control 1.0) will be allowed to continue. After Parliament voted on 11 March to replace blanket mass surveillance with targeted monitoring of suspect

Why should I care about the law when governments flout it?
Why should I care about the climate when governments destroy it?
Why should I care about racism when governments support it?
Why should I care about war Veterans when members of governments abuse them?
Why should I care about children when governments kill them?
Why should I care about privacy when governments invade it?

Governments are supposed to lead by example. Either rise up or be complicit.

Thanks for pointing out the update and their walking it back. Their explanation still seems sus to me.

The ArsTechnica article has an update to it and I kinda agree with the last paragraph of the update.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/02/firefox-deletes-promise-to-never-sell-personal-data-asks-users-not-to-panic/

Funny thing, I only just realized this happened a year ago. 🤷

As for Github, I"m still getting the funny redirect. Oddly enough, I also hit some kind of rate limit tonight even though I hadn't access GitHub all day.

Firefox deletes promise to never sell personal data, asks users not to panic

Mozilla says it deleted promise because "sale of data" is defined broadly.

@IndigoDusk @georgetakei

That's what I was just wondering. Is this satire or did he actually say that? Cause if he actually said that, omg... 😮

@crazyeddie @MostlyHarmless

It's not your VPN. I accessed it directly and got exactly the same behavior. It took a few tries but I managed to halt the browser when it tried to redirect to stay on the initial page with the actual diffs.

Sure enough, the change is right where you said it was.

For something I thought was a prank from MostlyHarmless, welp, let the enshittification continue I guess...

Edit: typo.

@catraxx MacGyver was played by Richard Dean Anderson. Yes, the very same that played O'Neill in Stargate. Great actor and your analogy is spot on!

I'll have to remember this thought when trying to explain the problems with AI to others.

@catraxx @dgar My friends and I are playing now with 3 of us on Linux and 1 steam deck and it works fine. However I will point out that we have a private dedicated server and have found that you definitely have to apply the DLL hack to raise the upload limits imposed by the devs.
