@pluralistic Robin's ideas remind me of Jonathon Haidt's moral foundations theories that the conservative mindset is authoritarian, Manichean-can't stand ambiguity, abhor uncertainty, very suspect of the new and different-tribal/group think, and highly sensitive to sanctity/purity. That's a bit oversimplified but he's done a lot of research and found a global fairly clear dichotomy wrt to liberal mindsets. That's a near-perfect recipe for delusional thinking and why they're far more religious.

@mmasnick If pecan pie was really that good, why is it pronounced in two radically different ways? Why not do a poll on the 'correct' pronunciation? You don't get a bunch of folks saying a pell', so apple pie is clearly the only choice of anyone with rational discerning taste. Pumpkin is just too shoe-ish.
