@mike I certainly don't regret starting to use Thunderbird some years ago. Can't imagine dealing with emails through the browser anymore.

I painted the giant amphibian Eryops megacephalus, known from the Early Permian of Texas and even Late Carboniferous of New Mexico. These carnivores could reach an impressive length of 3 meters.

@Critterzoology Wow, this is amazing!

Urda buechneri is a species of potentially parasitic isopod from the Middle Jurassic of Germany that was described by @mcranium et al. in 2023. The paper that describes U. buechneri also discusses how the genus Urda fits on the isopod family tree and how the associated fossils relate to the extant isopod family Gnathiidae.

New lab at the University of Reading

From 8 January 2024, I will be starting at the University of Reading as Lecturer in Zoology. I haven't technically got a research group or lab as such but I've decided to call my "lab" the Phylogenetic Form and Function Lab (for the time being in any case). I will be continuing with my teaching and research in vertebrate zoology, phylogenetics, and form and function. I am very excited to start on this new journey. If you are…

@Palaeojules Wow that dragonfly drawing is gorgeous!
@mattfossen So, this works by making a microscope stage motorized with a stepper plus control unit, right? EDIT: I just now saw the photo of your setup.
@mzedp I used mogrify resize to constrain the image dimensions so that Hugin sees the images as coming from one lens. It's not an optimal solution, but it works.
@mzedp I am dealing with the same problem currently. Recently, I learned how to make these kinds of panoramas in Hugin properly and reliably. However, it takes a lot of clicking through the Hugin interface. See my blog post below. If you have any idea how to automate this, please let me know. https://mcranium.github.io/macro_panorama_stitching

It seems that my new #photometricstereo dome makes also a quite decent ring light for #macrophotography of fossil insects #palaeoentomology
