"the #temnospondyls success lay in their generalist feeding ecology, enabling them to feed on a wide variety of prey... the freshwater habitats they preferred provided them with a relatively stable variety of food resources"

Ancient amphibians bounced back from Earth's greatest mass extinction by exploiting freshwater prey, study suggests

Ancient frog relatives survived the aftermath of the largest mass extinction of species by feeding on freshwater prey that evaded terrestrial predators, University of Bristol academics have found.

Someone asked me if I can draw an Odenwaldia heidelbergensis for them, so I did. The only specimen that isn't subject of discourse is the holotype, which was found in Waldkatzenbach near Heidelberg.

I painted the giant amphibian Eryops megacephalus, known from the Early Permian of Texas and even Late Carboniferous of New Mexico. These carnivores could reach an impressive length of 3 meters.

Fossil of Giant Triassic Amphibian Unearthed in Brazil | Sci.News

A new genus and species of temnospondyl amphibian has been described by a team of paleontologists from the Universidade Federal do Pampa, the Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco, Princeton University and Harvard University.

Happy to present a new #temnospondyl from the #Triassic of Australia, #Arenaerpeton supinatus.
Found in rocks destined for a garden retaining wall in the 90's, it's an amazing fossil with a near-complete skeleton and soft tissue preservation!

Two large Temnospondyls for my licensing library, which was sorely needing more Temnospondyls

First, Prionosuchus plummeri from Early Permian South America

Second, Siderops kehli from Early Jurassic Australia

Two #Mazothairos chase off a passing #Meganeura in a late Carboniferous swamp, startling a little #Archaeothyris. A #Sclerocephalus crawls ashore a little ways away, not realising there's a hidden #Arthropleura right there.

I've never really drawn paleoart set in the Carboniferous before, so I thought I'd start with the very basic 'giant bugs flying around in a swamp' trope.

@futurebird To my shame I've only ever included one insect in my palaeoart, and it was being devoured by a vertebrate (Lapillopsis nana). It is a probable neuropteran, whose head capsule was preserved inside an Early Triassic vertebrate coprolite, earning it the manuscript name Coprocephalus. Sadly it doesn't look like it ever got formally published.

Hi there, here’s Fedexia striegeli for you!

This #temnospondyl #amphibian lived in the territory of modern Pennsylvania in the #Carboniferous. It’s named after FedEx because the #fossils were found on the company's property.
