As a software engineer, here is my take of the moment:
There is no monolithic successor to Twitter. We don't want one, even a good one, because enlightened monarchs are followed by corrupt Elons.
Mastodon is not and may never be ready for prime time, but the fediverse might be.
@jeridansky I looked some more and found the full list of Mastodon servers. It's maybe not that useful, but interesting.
Generally you can type in the web address and visit a server without signing up to get a small taste of what it's like. Most listed servers have few users and are relatively inactive.
I like sfba.social, but I'm still looking for a long-term home base. I heard there may be a way to bring your follows along when you move.
The first thing newbies need to learn is how to spell "Mastodon".
Two O's, people. It's not "Mastadon".
