As a software engineer, here is my take of the moment:
There is no monolithic successor to Twitter. We don't want one, even a good one, because enlightened monarchs are followed by corrupt Elons.
Mastodon is not and may never be ready for prime time, but the fediverse might be.
The first thing newbies need to learn is how to spell "Mastodon".
Two O's, people. It's not "Mastadon".
