Middle aged white guy trying to become less ignorant over time.

Professional:
I build websites the "traditional" way. I’ve been building them for ~20yrs. Progressive Enhancement, HTML/CSS/JS, and accessible practices will always be core to quality work. Frameworks come and go.

Personal:
If I'm not looking back at my younger self and cringing a little, I stopped growing. I don't want to stop growing, so I've become comfortable with cringing.

Is “a Japanese” really the proper way to say “a Japanese person” in English? It sounds so wrong to me, as in de-humanising somehow. I’d never call someone or a hypothetical someone “an English” or “a French”. Though, now I think of it, I would use “a German” or “an Austrian”. The hell is going on with the English language here?

"in recent years the guests have seemed a bit predictable: senior executives from Apple. This year I again extended my usual invitation to Apple, but, for the first time since 2015, they declined."

Apple are so on the back foot in _every_ area of external perception that they're even avoiding the ever-soft-ball "practically got Tim's hand puppeteering him" Gruber.

Pathetic, Apple. Weak. Incredibly weak.

Politicians and pundits pit us against each other over bathroom signs, while CEOs get richer and we struggle to make ends meet.

Scapegoating trans women for bathroom “dangers” deflects our anger from their profit while we fear, and distracts from the real threat to women: predatory men who assault and abuse

Nice to see that such a well managed, focussed, and in-tune-with-their-users corporation as Mozilla is now, of course, open sourcing the "we somehow failed to monetise our acquisitions" parts of its business.

A shame, but they must, of course, instead chase that AI and other buzzword stuff their audience so desires...

Ok, I'm going to try Darkroom again but this time toss out all of my concepts about photo editing I've used for decades, and just read the manual.

Superficial similarities seem to be misleading - it's not using the same concepts as other software.

This is not a drill: Sir Ian McKellen will open an all-trans, non-binary production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night"!!!

July 25, 2025, in London--and it's a fundraiser for a trans charity!

Get thee there!

Sir Ian McKellen to open historic all-trans and nonbinary production of Twelfth Night

Director Phoebe Kemp said: "Twelfth Night already toys with gender and performance – it feels like Shakespeare wrote it for us"

Here @yatil is arguing the same point I have:

Others seem to feel the same way based on reposts and comments. Eg (only for logged-in bsky users, but screen shot attached):

The problem is the Google apologists don’t care and the ones who can make changes don’t want to (as evidenced by who they hire and support).
