...is just this guy. I do academic work on digital presentation of #MaterialTexts, John Lydgate's poems, #MedievalDrama, issues surrounding #data, and the shifting sands of late-medieval lay religion. Currently a Lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan and Co-Convenor of the graduate program in Digital Arts and Humanities. Formerly the ZKS-Lendrum Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Durham's Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Studies for the year 2022-2023.

Updated my personal site to reflect the UBC Okanagan gig and decided to editorialize a bit in the bit I had after I describe the various postdocs et al I've had:

"Which is all a very long-winded way of saying I think quite a bit about medieval stuff, in particular the relationship between texts, people, and spaces, and that I am one of a number of itinerant academics generated by the interstice between the Academy and the vageries of late-stage capitalism."

So updated #introduction: my name is Matthew Davis, and I am an itinerant #academic. Currently I'm a Lecturer and Co-Coordinator of the Graduate Theme in Digital Arts and Humanities at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. Prior to this I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Durham.

I work on #digital presentation of the material object, #medieval and early modern drama, the changing significations of Mary Magdalene, and if I had my druthers right to repair.

@deinol Have you seen this? I may pick up a copy to integrate with some ideas I had for the next iteration of my digital humanities courses.

I tried upgrading my instance and apparently broke the web interface, so this is a test post to see if the underlying server is still working.
This is part of the reason why I get antsy about big data approaches without some sort of close reading/return to the text involved. If all you look at are the results you miss all of these intervening steps (and this is an admittedly janky, gum-and-baling-wire approach, like how I feel a lot of my computational stuff is. I'm not good at polish). This is an awful lot of places for hidden editorial intervention in the results. But because it's "data," we tend to ignore this fact.

Georgia Dunn, the creator of Breaking Cat News, posted about this auction she's drawn a piece for. The young woman in question is working on her Gold Award for Girl Scouts and her project was to solicit donations of artwork, then auction those pieces off and donate the money to shelters working with senior pets. The link I'm sharing here is to the page where you can see all the pieces up for auction.

I don't know who needs to see this, but if you voted in Colorado’s third district, Adam Frisch vs Lauren Boebert, and your ballot was rejected you have a week to fix it.

In 2020, 21,838 ballots were rejected for signature verification.

If the Democrats do lose control of the House a lot of talk is going to be made about New York. What I want to talk about, instead, is how the Republicans ran ten uncontested races this cycle. I get that they were all in "safely red" districts, but when margins are this narrow you find someone to run. That more than anything else speaks to the ways that the Democrats allowed their state-level apparati to wither in the decades since the 90's. It _needs_ to be a bigger part of the conversation.
