On the 9th of April, 1723, the mayor of Leipzig, and head of the city council Abraham Platz wrote the following about the person he just hired for the position of Music Director at St Thomas's Church:
"Da man nun de besten nicht bekommen könne, musse man mittlere nehman."
Roughly translated from German: "Since the best (candidates) cannot be obtained, I suppose we will have to make due with the mediocre one."
The "mediocre" candidate Councilor Platz was speaking about, the person who was their third choice hire behind Telemann and Graupner, was none other than J.S. Bach, possibly the greatest writer of western classical music who ever lived.
Remember this the next time someone in a position of authority tries to diminish you or the quality of your work. Sometimes people in power don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
