Professor of Economic Geography, University of Cambridge. My research is on labour markets, migration, urban planning, and regional policy. I'm also Fellow of Pembroke College and Chair of RSAI-BIS. My family is Cuban/German, but I was born in England and grew up in Venezuela. I love photography and baking, and have a crazy cocker spaniel called Fonzie.

Excellent article explaining how the Venezuelan opposition organised a massive exercise in citizen data science, to prove that Maduro had lost the election. Many of those involved are now in hiding or have been arrested or kidnapped. www.theguardian.com/world/articl...

Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Micro SD Cards

Back when floppies were new we kept them safe in somewhat terrible plastic bins. Now that micro SD cards can hold thousands of times more data they're what we use and what we lose! Because, smol. So, here's a little throwback to the floppy organizer but sized for micro SD cards. I used double-sided tape to stick mine to the top of my PC monitor because I'd lose it on my messy desk.Note: does not include micro CD cards

@IzzyChambers Thank you! He’s meant to be an English working cocker spaniel, but now that you mention it, he does look like a Boykin spaniel, and is larger than the usual English cocker.
@mike I love the idea of Mastodon, and have had some interesting exchanges here. But it doesn’t have the functionality yet to replace what Twitter provided. Bluesky comes closer to it. My main issue with Mastodon is the fact that I am unable to view posts by people who are “unknown” to my instance. I’ve moved instances but that has unlocked some topics but not others.
Mark two of trying to get to Alicante. Hoping the UK's creaky infrastructure holds up today. Looking forward to seeing everyone at #ERSA #ERSA2023 if I ever make it there!
The cat is out of the bag - and I am very excited to announce that this week I am officially joining the University of #Derby as full #Professor of Social #Policy!
I am really looking forward to meeting new colleagues and students and expanding my Midlands and global networks. #newjob #academicmastodon
@mastodonmigration This is great. I think opt-in is probably good to preserve privacy. The key issue for me (to make it useful to work) is whether we can search across the entirety of Mastodon, or is it still restricted to “accounts known to my instance”. That is a huge limitation for me, as I can’t find posts on various niche topics unless I follow the poster (or someone in my instance does).

Probably none of us who spent a lot of time there like to admit it, but Twitter was in many ways massively multi-player online game for news/policy people.

And by introducing what were essentially for-fee cheat codes, Elon broke the game.

I don't see a lot of tech reporting reflecting this reality, and that's unfortunate.

@drneevil Thank you, this looks great too! Will keep me going until S3!
