@stavvers There are no men's chess tournaments and titles anymore, just general chess (in which anyone can compete) and women's chess. The latter exists to encourage young women to play the game and offer them some role models in a field where there are so few women (for a variety of reasons).

This is really fascinating. A company rebuilt Mastodon’s core functions with a new dev technology that flies in comparison to Ruby on Rails. https://blog.redplanetlabs.com/2023/08/15/how-we-reduced-the-cost-of-building-twitter-at-twitter-scale-by-100x/

(EDIT: They may not be open sourcing the dev tech)

How we reduced the cost of building Twitter at Twitter-scale by 100x

I’m going to cover a lot of ground in this post, so here’s the TLDR: We built a Twitter-scale Mastodon instance from scratch in only 10k lines of code. This is 100x less code than the ~1M lines Twi…

Discovery here IS bad, and — I hate to say it — the solution to that is an (entirely optional) algorithm that surfaces potential follows and compelling content right out of the gate.

Algorithms aren’t inherently evil. Hell, “show posts in reverse chronological order” is in itself an algorithm.

What matters are 1) choice and 2) the intention with which the algorithm was designed.

So far @ernest has financed kbin through personal funds, and modest donations ($11,320) from buymecoffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin).

After much urging he has set up Patron (https://www.patreon.com/kbin_pub) and Liberapay (https://liberapay.com/kbin).

We can now support kbin on an ongoing basis!

Check out his post >>> https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/177112

@beforewisdom > Federation is not a must.

Maybe not for you. But it is for me and many others, who consciously chose the Fediverse as a more robust form of social media.

> I've used the Internet since the 90s without it.

So you've never used email or usenet?

> Shooting the shit about the latest news item.

Ah, I see. Squabbles is for shitposting. Yeah, that's not for me.

I *want* something a bit more permanent, as I engage in activism. (Not all the time, but still...)

@petealexharris @wzhkevin As the top comment there shows, there *are* Chinese characters that fit. The people just think the Japanese ones look cool. And I get it—Chinese characters are very angular.

@maegul @beforewisdom There's the top level microblog which is just a random feed with comments from all federated instances. Then each magazine also has its microblog, which is indeed filtered by hashtag. And each magazine can set its own associated hashtags.

But currently it's not possible to get a feed on Kbin with just comments from the people you follow.

@maegul @beforewisdom There doesn't appear to be a Kbin feed of people I follow...
@wzhkevin @petealexharris Sure, but that's mostly politics. And unless it affects them personally, or sentiments are being whipped up, the vast majority of people do not care about that.
