What do STEM PhD dropouts do now that bigtech hiring is so much weaker than in the 2010s?

2023 Sizilien nur mit Nahverkehr
Google My MapsAnd so my regional-trains-only trip ends with boarding an intercity ferry to the one European country I still haven't been to, a country without any railways at all.
Vehicle 35: Ferry Pozzallo - Valletta
Depart: 21:30 Arrive: 23:15
Frequency: 1-3 per day
Operator: Virtu Ferries
Route established: 1989?
Train 32: R Siracusa - Pozzallo
Depart: 17:39 Arrive: 18:49
Frequency: 6 per day
Operator: Trenitalia
Line opened: 1886-1891, never electrified
Vehicle 33: Bus Catania Centrale - Siracusa
Depart: 15:03 Arrive: 17:00
Frequency: 11 per day
Operator: Autoservizimo Linaro on behalf of Trenitalia
Route established: This weekend
Unfortunately the railway line between Catania and Siracusa is closed all weekend, so I have to interrupt my regional-trains-only journey here and take a rail replacement bus. At least my €29 Trenitalia regional ticket is accepted.
Train 31: RV Messina Centrale - Catania Centrale
Depart: 13:20 Arrive: 14:43
Frequency: 5 per day (along with 14 slower trains)
Operator: Trenitalia
Line opened: 1866-1867, electrified 1958
In addition to being my first non-rail segment since Berlin (ignoring the San Marino side trip) this is also the first non-electrified segment. I saw the Iginia, which does have batteries, unloading railcars, but it's a hybrid (I saw exhaust) so I wouldn't call it electrified.
Vehicle 31: Ferry Villa San Giovanni - Messina Marittima
Depart: 12:40 Arrive: 13:00
Frequency: 15 per day (mostly hourly with gaps)
Operator: Trenitalia Blu Jet
Route established: 1905?
