Frequency: Peak only, 11 trains per day
Operator: Österreichische Bundesbahn
Line opened: 1872, electrified 1926
The single-track railway across Liechtenstein is the main route for nonstop intercity Switzerland-Austria trains, so there's not much space for local trains. In 2020 Liechtenstein voters rejected https://vorarlberg.orf.at/stories/3064562/ a referendum to double-track it & expand service.

62,3 Prozent (10.382 Stimmen) sagten Nein. Mobilitätslandesrat Johannes Rauch (Grüne) bedauert den Ausgang.

In addition to seeing how far I can get on regional trains, my goals for this trip include visiting the three European countries I haven't been to, so I'm getting off here to spend the next few hours in Liechtenstein.
There are no more trains from Schaan-Vaduz until late afternoon so I'll then walk to Sevelen in Switzerland to continue onward.

The huddle waiting for the ersatzbus is large and contains Bernina Express passengers who apparently have priority over us.

A large huddle of people waited for an ersatzbus, some who had apparently been there hours, including Bernina Express passengers who had priority over us. A train at track 4 was signed for Poschiavo but the staff said they were uncertain whether it would in fact run. The "coming soon" and "does not exist" signs on top of the station building seemed emblematic of the situation. Suddenly it was announced that a train would board on track 3, and the bus huddle returned to the rail platforms.

Frequency: Normally every hour, today only when all hope seems lost
Operator: Rhätische Bahn

The passengers applauded when the train started moving, though uncertainty remained about whether it would reach Tirano in time to catch the last train to Milano.

Depart: 20:08 Arrive: 22:40
Frequency: Every hour
Operator: Trenord
Line opened: 1840-1902, electrified 1902-1939
We wound up with a zero-minute transfer in Tirano. I was the first of several runners to make it across but in the end everyone who seemed to be in any sort of hurry made it. Trenord departed two minutes late (wonder how they feel about being held due to delays in Switzerland).

Taking a side trip to San Marino by bus, but I will return to Rimini station to continue my regional-trains-only trip tomorrow.

I also had occasion to ride Rimini's grade-separated trolleybus rapid transit system, Metromare.

Looks like we're taking the high speed (direttissima) line between Orte and Roma, so the above should actually say "line opened 1865-1977".

Frequency: Every 7-8 minutes

I stopped here to check out the world's oldest pedestrian tunnel, the Crypta Neapolitana from 37 BCE. The east end is in a park that closes at 14:45, but the west is in a random side street. The old tourist displays suggest it was last passable decades ago.

Frequency: 15 per day (mostly hourly with gaps)
Operator: Trenitalia Blu Jet
Route established: 1905?
In addition to being my first non-rail segment since Berlin (ignoring the San Marino side trip) this is also the first non-electrified segment. I saw the Iginia, which does have batteries, unloading railcars, but it's a hybrid (I saw exhaust) so I wouldn't call it electrified.
Train 31: RV Messina Centrale - Catania Centrale
Depart: 13:20 Arrive: 14:43
Frequency: 5 per day (along with 14 slower trains)
Operator: Trenitalia
Line opened: 1866-1867, electrified 1958
Unfortunately the railway line between Catania and Siracusa is closed all weekend, so I have to interrupt my regional-trains-only journey here and take a rail replacement bus. At least my €29 Trenitalia regional ticket is accepted.
Vehicle 33: Bus Catania Centrale - Siracusa
Depart: 15:03 Arrive: 17:00
Frequency: 11 per day
Operator: Autoservizimo Linaro on behalf of Trenitalia
Route established: This weekend
Train 32: R Siracusa - Pozzallo
Depart: 17:39 Arrive: 18:49

Vehicle 35: Ferry Pozzallo - Valletta
Depart: 21:30 Arrive: 23:15
Frequency: 1-3 per day
Operator: Virtu Ferries
Route established: 1989?
And so my regional-trains-only trip ends with boarding an intercity ferry to the one European country I still haven't been to, a country without any railways at all.
== Berlin to Pozzallo by local/regional trains ==
Vehicles: 32 trains, 1 ferry, 1 rail-replacement bus
Distance: 2755km by train, 7km foot, 8km ferry, 100km bus
In-vehicle time: ~40hr train, 20min ferry, 2hr bus
