To be honest, I initially did not find it terribly interesting.

But as I read, it grew on me. I could recognise myself in that role of observer. Here, but not really part of it. A stranger among strangers. And isn't that what most of us are a lot of the time? Ernaux's book makes us ask that and what it means for us and for society at large.

I've been curious about Annie Ernaux's writing ever since she won the Nobel Prize last year. Today I finished rearing her book "Journal du dehors" (name of the English translation: "Exteriors"). Here are my thoughts:

The book is written in a style that reminds one of journal entries and consists largely of observations Ernaux makes in her town of Cergy-Pontoise, near Paris. She observes and writes about the conversations and actions of strangers in the grocery stores, train stations etc.

Queer Liberation Library—a wholly online library that is packed with LGBTQ+ titles. QLL launched in October and has already racked up 2,300 members. It’s free to sign up, and like a regular library, it doesn’t cost anything to borrow any of the e-books or audiobooks in the collection. Meanwhile, anyone can access QLL anywhere in the United States, even in those places where book-banning legislation has been passed.

Finished this Steinbeck novella today I found it is incredibly well-written. Like many of his works, it deals with the effect of poverty and wealth on people. A poor pearl diver finds a incredibly valuable pearl and with it dreams of a future he could have never imagined. But perhaps this find will turn out to be more of a curse than a blessing. "The Pearl" keeps you until the very end between feelings of hope and a sense of impending doom. To know which wins, you'll have to read it. #books
I'm going to be trying out Threads for a bit. Find me there under the same name 😊

In All But Six Countries, Intersex People Are Not Protected from Medical Abuse

A new report shows that intersex people globally lack human rights protections.

Them.
Made a quick trip to the city #library today and got some more books to read. One novel by an old favourite (Steinbeck) and another by maybe a new one. I'll be posting a short review after I'm done with each. #books #literature #johnsteinbeck #classics #nobelprize #nobelprizewinner #annieernaux
Today I learned that Virginia Woolf also thought James Joyce was overrated and now I feel a bit better about having that highly controversial opinion. #books #reading #writing #literature
Pretty disappointing that microbiologists and biologists are the same size, generally speaking.
