Google Chrome is downloading a 4 GB Gemini Nano model onto users' machines without consent, with no opt-in, no opt-out short of enterprise tooling, and an automatic re-download every time the user deletes it. The pattern is identical to the Anthropic Claude Desktop case I wrote about last month, but the scale is between two and three orders of magnitude larger. This article does the legal analysis and, for the first time, the environmental analysis. The numbers are not small.

We are now being told we need Digital ID, age verification and KYC to "protect kids" at OS level but the simplest solution is the best one. Hear me out:

Keep computers in common areas (kitchen or living room) and delay smartphones. We shouldn't trade everyone's privacy for a problem that can be solved with parenting, love, explaining dangers to kids and stricter corporate accountability.

How hard is this? What am I missing?

This is a pic of Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS), trapped in a celestial cage of light streaks formed by LEO satellites racing across the sky in this 10-minute exposure image.

This is with ~10,000 orbiting satellites. Now, imagine a million of them, each with a solar array ~10x larger.

An FYI to folk booking tickets online: if you notice price jumps between the first time you look and when you are ready to book, delete cache and empty cookies. The airline deleted their post a short time later because someone was being too helpful.
