5 things that led to an Google HCU recovery (and 3 that didn't)

Google's helpful content update has been challenging for many websites – but redefining it could lead to recovery and improvement.

Search Engine Land

If you've been struggling to make sense of the Google HCU, the Helpful Content Update, I have a story of hope: a recovery. But to do it, I needed to change how I interpreted what Google had been trying to do.

I'm a technology journalist, and that means making sense of technology for people. But I'm also an SEO specialist, and that means solving problems of search for websites, even if it might be my own.

My first article at @searchengineland is a combination of both of those with a hint of humour, as I explain my process that has seemingly led to a HCU recovery.

@rustybrick @johnmu have sent you an email with a link to the doc. Cheers.

@johnmu I get this. So I used Moises to split, but it wasn't always perfect. It would have been amazing if the tracks were essentially proper stems. It's still early days.

The more I played, the more I realised the AI can be used to come up with interesting approaches I wanted to record myself. If I had the time. Or talent. lol.

Logic's virtual Session instruments feel like they'd be suited to directly connect with AI nicely, though, at least in theory. I wonder if this is where the technology goes.

@johnmu Udio for most of it, Suno for a couple tracks. I learned early on writing worked better than automating the lyrics, and then used AI to separate the tracks and remixed everything. There's an Atmos variant of one of them that I'm too cheap to upload.

I wrote a couple of pieces on the experience:

After dabbling in AI music, I get why the music industry isn't happy – Pickr

Could you tell the difference between an AI artist and a real one? I accidentally made Bowie and Beyonce and Elton sing. After experimenting with AI music, it's easy to see why the music industry is concerned.

@johnmu @rustybrick Hah. Another attempt at thinking outside the box for SEO. I tried making SEO entertaining with an album previously. https://open.spotify.com/album/71EqXD0YXx6PnmwRiL1ZFL?si=mQMV7TxTSlSaJdVJWdZv1A

Hopefully the article on the HCU recovery is, dare I say it, helpful content...? :)

I've written a rather long and slightly humorous (slightly) on the things I did that helped lead to an HCU recovery.

I don't believe Pickr is the best place to run this, so pitched to Search Engine Land, but never heard back.

So where is the best place to run this: LinkedIn, Medium, or nudging @rustybrick to see if he takes voluntary contributions?

Happy to help. I've been trying to proactively help other small publishers based on my successes.

@phocks but do they work? Important question on July 20. ;)

If you're still waking up to a blue screen, I've written a piece (and talked about the issue on radio) that should help: https://www.pickr.com.au/news/2024/faulty-crowdstrike-patch-takes-out-the-world-of-windows-what-you-can-do/
