I'm always looking to learn new things.

Banner is a penguin, likely emperor. Avatar is a cat watching a mouse which is partially hidden by a plant while outdoors.

@bookstodon This is my kind of protagonist: “I look at food and wonder: Can I eat that without having to put my book down?” -- The Secret, Book & Scone Society, by Ellery Adams. #bookstodon #reading
Watched the #NBAAllStarWeekend Sunday edition and eh... Was it more competitive than last year? Sure. Was it kind of a foregone conclusion that the OGs would win? At least to me it was. I read the rosters and asked myself, "How can that team even lose?" And that was without LeBron playing. It was fun but not amazing. #NBA

I'm not sure how I would feel as Mac McClung - 3 time slam dunk contest champion, pretty much conquered the G League, and still can't get a two-way contract converted to a full #NBA deal.

He hasn't convinced a team he's an asset on a roster full-time. Sure, the first two are great, but the last one is kind of important, too.

I've been watching #4Nations the new #NHL All-Star festivity and overall I like it, except the "4 nations" part of it. Where's Draisaitl for example? Being German, he's not allowed to participate, essentially. Pastrnak can pretty much argue inclusion every year, too. But not this year.

Just do what's kind of obvious - keep it as-is except the selection process is not nation-based. I believe the #NBA is doing something similar, but they're not limiting it by national origin, citizenship, whatnot. (I do think NHL's longer more round-robin approach is better than cramming it into one night like the NBA.)

One of my favorite career trajectories is Colleen Fitzpatrick. She played Amber Von Tussle in Hairspray (1988), graduated from NYU in 1991 with a BA in English, and was then the lead singer of alternative band Eve's Plum in the #1990s (yes, named after actress Eve Plumb). Not being finished yet, her biggest moment in the spotlight was when she had a #popmusic #onehitwonder with "Graduation (Friends Forever)" under the name Vitamin C in 2000 (third single from a 1999 album). That was the song with Pachelbel's Canon in D played by strings in it. She continued to act, and is now a #music executive at Netflix, after being VP of Music at Nickelodeon. Not bad for a one hit wonder most people don't remember today.

I haven't read Project Hail Mary (PHM) but from reading the description, my initial reaction was it feels similar to Currents of Space by Asimov. It appears they can both be described as, "The main character has amnesia in space, and needs to save society."

Yes, of course that's an oversimplification and quite broad, but I think it works. The details around them, like what they are saving society from, are different naturally.

This page seems to agree: https://themetricmaven.com/project-hail-mary/ It describes PHM as "like a combination of Isaac Asimov’s The Gods Themselves, The Currents of Space, Micheal Creighton’s The Andromeda Strain..."

I'm sure PHM is delightful, just reflecting on how ideas are often recycled and remixed, though sometimes still recognizable even after remixing them.

For those who have watched #DeathinParadise has there ever been a DI who said, "Yes! I get to work in the Caribbean!" I've seen every episode, and I think for the most part they were more eager to leave the island than to stay (and I mean especially in their first 1-3 episodes, some grew to like it). After one or two doing that, it's quite a cliche.

Just finished the #ChroniclesofNarnia and now starting #Hobbit and #LOTR This is probably the 3rd or 4th time I've read each series, but I haven't read them back to back before.

In April-May I'll be in #Portland OR. This will be my third visit since 2021. I know the city reasonably well for a non-Oregonian. I know the highlights and my favorite places (including I'm in camp Blue Star > Voodoo).

I'll be there for two weeks, and I'll visit within the city and outside #PDX (yes, I can fill the two weeks, especially with day trips). What are some lesser known things you would recommend to a return visitor?

My interests are (local) history, art, wandering neighborhoods, natural water, non-desert nature. I love seeing places and objects connected with history. I won't rent a car.

I know I'll be at Washington Park, Mt Hood, Forest Park, the historical society museum, the art museum, Multnomah Falls. I may look around for sites associated with Beverly Cleary. I may take in a game, perhaps Sea Dogs, Timbers, or Thorns.

While I know I can fill the two weeks, I really want to take in some new things I may have missed.

And hopefully someday Flock Food Hall will open.

I started late, anyone know why the #PWHL game between Montreal and Boston is being played in Seattle today? Definitely the Kraken ice.
