I write the Fediverse Report, a news site about what is happening in the fediverse.

This is my personal account, where I share and comment on anything I find interesting.

greatly appreciate Zecharias sharing his thoughts here, and its worth checking out. if youre interested in #fedimeta stuff, its also worth thinking about the implications here though, as it poses some major questions on how the fediverse currently functions.

Criticism here is focused on Jeffs identity (lack of journa credentials, lack of openly available info on identity), which is a valid perspective. But there is also the part about the skills that are required to be a good system administrator, something that Jeff and his team are actively contributing to the fediverse with. For example, by releasing tools for an easier hardened install of masto and pixelfed.

So if the expectations are that good servers can do both (admin identity part of community, and good sysadmin skills), the amount of people who have both decrease significantly. plus, if this is what people want out of their server, it will likely lead to fewer but larger servers. And this is again something that people on the fediverse tend to have serious problems with, if you look at how often people critique mastodon.social for its size.

no easy answer here, it seems.

🧵 Hey all! This is a new account, I'm still Zecharias Zelalem, freelance journalist and aspiring OSINTer providing news and analysis on the Horn of Africa for a variety of international media outlets. For the past year or so, I posted via @[email protected], but I've transitioned away from that instance. I'll be posting from this account from now on. After recent changes on the journa dot host instance, I had no choice but to set up elsewhere. Hope to continue exchanges and friendships here.

I see Israeli Facebook is filling up with constant posts looking for missing people. Another reminder that digital infrastructure is too crucial nowadays to leave in the hands of unaccountable private companies.
Exclusive: Israel seized Binance crypto accounts to 'thwart' Islamic State, document shows

Israel has seized around 190 crypto accounts at crypto exchange Binance since 2021, including two it said were linked to Islamic State and dozens of others it said were owned by Palestinian firms connected to the Islamist Hamas group, documents released by the country's counter-terror authorities show.

Weird question: is there a good internal knowledge database tool designed specifically for newsrooms and journalists?

What I'm looking for is something that could be useful for reporters trying to track down context of events. You share notes with other journalists in your organization, maybe have some kind of internal wiki thing, and maybe a searchable timeline tool for social posts / web links / feeds?

Does something like this exist?
#bluesky users really want DMs, and I see quite a few posts citing it the lack of DMs as the main reason they cannot fully leave X behind yet.

Isnt this an opportunity for fedi apps that allow for multiple accounts from both
#mastodon and bluesky (such as Ivory) to integrate a DM feature? So if you connect both your bluesky and masto account to ivory, you can DM on your bluesky account via your masto account
next step on X, removing all interaction counts (likes, comments etc) from all posts and only leaving view counts.

PREVIEW: X will remove the interaction counts (likes, reposts) from the main timeline, leaving only view counts. You will be able to see these numbers when you tap into a post. The intent of this is to improve readability.

Arc (and soon, other browsers) will summarize content from websites, including from behind paywalls. Here's why that's a problem for the open web; I've tried to brainstorm a few potential solutions. https://werd.io/2023/ai-summarization-and-the-open-web #AI

It's a useful feature - but a problem for the ecosystem
