so long, and thanks for all the (fire)fish!
@renchap gotcha, thanks for the update!
@danhon hi, I write on fedi about fedi, and definitely very interested in this!
@kissane @danhon

god-tier knowledge queen strikes again lol

thanks for the update tho!
@renchap congratulations!

Surprised to hear its a volunteer position though, especially considering mastodon's annual report for 2022 (+326k donations, -127k expenses). Chance this might change to a paid position at some point in the future?
@danhon as someone doing journalism on the fediverse about the fediverse, would love to join as well!

i think its worth pointing out that Tow Center provided funding for the journa.host server, the shutdown of which sparked this whole thread above by Zecharias

but thats kinda what jeffs project is though. Im not gonna get into debates about identity, but I am willing to stick it up for Jeff in the regard that he's put serious effort in the sysadmin side of hosting and providing spaces for journalists. If serious sysadmin stuff is not enough to provide a good server for journalists, than thats fair enough, and I understand the arguments that Zecharias puts forward here for moving, totally valid. But it says to me that fedi is even further away from being a good place for journalists than we hoped it would be.

to make it even more complicated, i dont really see a world in which there are thematic servers that are run competently by their own community that also leads to centralisation around that server. and a centralised server, especially around a contentious topic like journalism, comes with its own whole set of problems
greatly appreciate Zecharias sharing his thoughts here, and its worth checking out. if youre interested in #fedimeta stuff, its also worth thinking about the implications here though, as it poses some major questions on how the fediverse currently functions.

Criticism here is focused on Jeffs identity (lack of journa credentials, lack of openly available info on identity), which is a valid perspective. But there is also the part about the skills that are required to be a good system administrator, something that Jeff and his team are actively contributing to the fediverse with. For example, by releasing tools for an easier hardened install of masto and pixelfed.

So if the expectations are that good servers can do both (admin identity part of community, and good sysadmin skills), the amount of people who have both decrease significantly. plus, if this is what people want out of their server, it will likely lead to fewer but larger servers. And this is again something that people on the fediverse tend to have serious problems with, if you look at how often people critique mastodon.social for its size.

no easy answer here, it seems.

🧵 Hey all! This is a new account, I'm still Zecharias Zelalem, freelance journalist and aspiring OSINTer providing news and analysis on the Horn of Africa for a variety of international media outlets. For the past year or so, I posted via @[email protected], but I've transitioned away from that instance. I'll be posting from this account from now on. After recent changes on the journa dot host instance, I had no choice but to set up elsewhere. Hope to continue exchanges and friendships here.
