Art is a kind of human communication that transcends space and time.
It's not the end product that matters, it's who, why and how made it.
This is why I think after the generative large machine learning models hype dies down, we'll find appropriate uses for them, and genuine art will never go away. The spirituality is a part of what makes us human. We can make a perfect simulation of a human mind, but we can't create a soul. Photography didn't kill paintings.

synth.is evolving sounds that don't exist yet

We've been exploring how evolutionary algorithms can discover entirely new sounds, not just variations of existing ones.

synth.is: evolving sounds that don't exist yet

We've been working on something that might change how we think about sound discovery. For the past while, we've been exploring how we can use evolutionary algorithms - the same principles that created all the diversity in nature - to discover completely new sounds.

Here's a short presentation about where the synth.is project stands and where it's headed next:

So far there is a prototype for running #sound discovery simulations with #evolutionary #algorithms, and a #web interface for exploring the results. The next step is to figure out how this could fit into #music production workflows. And perhaps most importantly, what is a good way for us humans to interact with and guide the evolutionary process?

It was a pleasure to present the https://synth.is project and demo the https://phylogeny.synth.is tool at the Communication Acoustics Lab in the Centre for Digital Music (C4DM) at Queen Mary University of London during this summer’s Creative Audio Synthesis and Interfaces Workshop: https://www.c4dm.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/news/2025-09-08.Synthesizer-Workshop/

Thanks to @vmad for taking this nice photo during the demo.

today's #ambient -ish #sound lineage exploration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqIwo4CPeGY --- during which i was summoned to escort a spider (explaining a slower than usual pace somewhere in the middle). kind of like the latter part.

At their core, #AI models are nothing more than #compression models that take the corpus of #data humanity has and boil it down to a set of weights. https://cefboud.github.io/posts/compression/
