I’ve spent enough time staring at old Tiwanaku photos that I’m making up little scenes in my head. For example, I think it’s the same dog photobombing both these images taken in 1876 by Georges B. von Grumbkow. I can see him following the photographer around site and then growing bored and falling asleep at each stop as Grumbkow set up equipment and took shots.

I’m organizing a TAG Santa Fe session on sketching and uncertainty in archaeology with Zoe Crossland and @roddick_a. Check out our abstract and other sessions at the link. Some of NEH-Mellon fellowship work on Late Formative Tiwanaku will be featured!

A photo of the some of the participating parents (pregnant at the time of the study but now with babies!) and artists (I'm siting on the middle right with a tan coat and jeans).

And here is my contribution, "Variants", to the @aoc_study exhibition, created after multiple visits to the @sloboda_lab at McMaster University to learn all about the early origins of health and disease.

"Variants" addresses the complexity of factors affecting the early origins of health and disease. The sequence of paintings in this triptych guides the viewer through the process of a hypothetical fetus becoming a physical reality.

I’m just back from two weeks in Chiapas Mexico. While I was there to see Maya archaeological sites and collect references for illustrations, I couldn’t help but notice all the butterflies. So many butterflies! Every day I spotted new species I hadn’t seen before. This one hung out on my backpack for a while and gave me a surprise when it opened its wings. Anybody more knowledgeable know the species?

A little watercolor of Toby, my sister-in-law’s cat, who passed last year.

I painted it on cold press paper, not my usual choice. We fought a bit but I’d like to think we became friends in the end.
