It implies there’s a “normal” and they’re not it. An us & them & they’re the outsiders.
The whole conservative self-image is based on the idea that they’re the silent majority, Joe Six Pack with normal every day regular concerns & cultural values. Liberals & leftists are the freaks, not them!
