One of the things I think we're missing is a good way to perceive and consider and compare the various problems that occur on different instances, and the various ways they're handled.

If instances are analogous to cities, towns, villages, I think we need the equivalent of "local journalism" covering instances before it becomes possible to properly perceive how their cultures differ, what similarities there are, what works well, what marginalizes people.

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

If there's one piece of advice I'd give the newbies still pouring in by the day, it's this;

Post!

You don't have to be a passive audience for celebrity accounts. Reply to random conversations and crack jokes, express yourself however you see fit (with respect and care for others of course). This place is here for you to share, as much as it is for anyone else.

Given that Musk is going all in on Nazi memes and has announced that he will reinstate all of the accounts that were suspended for hate speech and other egregious behavior, Twitter is becoming a real threat to vulnerable and marginalized communities, public figures, and society in general. Please report the Twitter app on the Apple App Store. Here's how: PS. If you agree, don't just like this toot but #PleaseBoost it.

@adamgreenfield @kaxline @DenialShown @ntnsndr I’m aware of the pros and cons to all of the tech I use.
@adamgreenfield @kaxline @DenialShown @ntnsndr not to my knowledge, but there may be an anomoly out there. The real struggles w DAOs, that ive witnessed, is the over reliance of technology to mitigate human relationships and engagement. Thats where many fall apart. They fail understand, anticipate and build for humans first.
@adamgreenfield @desertrat @DenialShown @ntnsndr Without #DAOs and #web3, I wouldn't have joined any journalism org. The open and permissionless nature is technically possible elsewhere, but it's just not happening in the same way. I'd say the fact that someone like me can join a group like JournoDAO and start having important conversations and contributing is a win. And it's happening all over the space. New people are finding their causes and purpose.
@adamgreenfield @desertrat @DenialShown @ntnsndr To be a fair comparison we’d have to look at the current models and infrastructure and their carbon footprint and entrenched wealth inequality. It’s not like what we have is working great.
@adamgreenfield @desertrat @DenialShown @ntnsndr It’s easy to poke holes in crypto and DAOs in their current state, the same way that the promises of the internet were pretty far off in the late 90s. We just see more solid foundations here with getting rid of intermediaries like Substack, Stripe, Twitter, etc. to allow journalists to receive more of the value they generate. It’s far from perfect, just less crappy than the current centralized infrastructure.
