FYI: if you’re paying more than $20/month for your (US) cell phone, there might be decent alternatives. For literally half my life I’ve been an AT&T customer, but it turns out when the competition charges $10/month to AT&T’s $55, there’s no reason to stay.

I moved to France and was shocked at how cheap the phone plans are here, so I looked into it for my US number and there are some non-prepaid options now! Hopefully the tide turns soon 🤞🌊

People have been posting glaring examples of ChatGPT’s gender bias, like arguing that attorneys can't be pregnant. So @sayashk and I tested ChatGPT on WinoBias, a standard gender bias benchmark. Both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 are about 3 times as likely to answer incorrectly if the correct answer defies gender stereotypes — despite the benchmark dataset likely being included in the training data. https://aisnakeoil.substack.com/p/quantifying-chatgpts-gender-bias

AI Snake Oil

Me and a few other climate folks on Twitter have noticed a very clear new prominence of climate deniers and delayers

So with some help, I gathered up some data and checked - it turns out that denial/delay, pro-fossil disinformation accounts have seen massive growth in their audience, while pro-climate-action accounts have either stagnated or shrunk.

Elon Musk is reshaping Twitter into a safe space for right-wingers, and in doing so, empowering climate change deniers, delayers and pro-fossil advocates more than ever before.

Musk is remaking Twitter into a climate denier sanctuary

I got some data that analyses how climate deniers have changed their audience size, relative to pro-climate accounts, on Musk’s Twitter. It’s….not good.

EPISODE 99: "Car Brain with Dr. Ian Walker."

@ianwalker joins us for a fascinating discussion about a new study into the unconscious biases we all share in favor of cars, whether we drive or not — a phenomenon he and his co-authors call "motonormativity."

We've added GPT-3 revision suggestions to #manubot. The point where it suggested changes that fixed an incorrect reference to a mathematical symbol was 🤯.

"If a dozen passenger jets were crashing and burning across the state every year, imagine the national media attention and government investigations. We’d think twice about flying anywhere. There would be a large-scale effort to stop planes from crashing. But nearly 10 people killed on average every day while walking, rolling and driving in California? Well, that’s just how it is."

Traffic violence continues to surge in L.A. Why can't (or won't) we make streets safer?

In L.A., more people were killed in car crashes than in shootings last year. It'll take more than safe driving PSAs to save lives.
