Honestly moving to Mastodon from the bird site feels like I just switched to PBS after years of exclusively watching a reality TV show called, I don't know, EXTREME HATEFEST: ORGY ISLAND or something.
Like, yeah, of course it's going to be a little jarring but trust me it's better this way.
Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.
It’ll be great to see [email protected] or whatever domain they want to use.
Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.
Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.
Thoughts on minimum wage:
Maybe we shouldn't pick a flat value that just becomes a political football, and doesn’t move with inflation.
Instead, stack rank metro areas across the country, pick the median, and figure out what hourly rate constitutes a living wage there (let’s say it turns out to be $15).
Instead of putting that in the law as a flat value, make a law that specifies minimum wage as n% of GDP-PPP per capita or something, or or some other analysis based on cost of a basket of goods and services + local rental rates.
That way, minimum wage can move up or down with the economy (perhaps assessed at the end of the year for the following year).
It would move with inflation or deflation.
Companies would always be able to budget the minimum wage for the following year once economic data are released.
This would allow for different minimum wages in different metros.
And with a relative equation defining it instead of a flat value, it would never need to be debated again, because it would move with the times.
