Microsoft, one of the world’s most profitable companies - a story in two parts.

Like many tech-oriented people, I learned to program #computers in high school. HOWEVER, for me that was in 1965.

Cass Tech in #Detroit #Michigan was given an IBM1620 by IBM and we learned to program in straight binary, SPS (assembly-like language), and FORTRAN II.

Weird machine that had no fixed word size but operated on "strings" of 6-bit characters. More details in the alt text of the image and at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_1620

Once you realize how wasteful of land use urban highways are, you can’t unknow it.

It’s kind of amazing that you can fit about half of Bern’s 🇨🇭 built Old City (Altstadt, eastern portion shown) in the just footprint of Seattle’s I-5/I-90 interchange. Two of those interchanges would basically be all of the Altstadt.

Amazon is shutting down #AmazonSmile, its charitable wing. I analyzed its TY2020 tax filings.

Four groups — the ASPCA, St. Jude’s, the Nature Conservancy and the American Red Cross — received more than $1 million. Only 24 secured more than $100,000, while about 230 got more than $10,000.

*Thousands* of churches, neighborhood associations, animal shelters and little leagues received just $5.

Amazon’s charity arm is shutting down next month amid broader job cuts at the company.

Me: I didn’t have time to go jogging today.

Them: You say that every day.

Me: It’s a running joke.

She called expansion of the mine a "betrayal of present and future generations."

“Greta #Thunberg nahe #Luetzerath: Festnahme an der Abbruchkante. Ihre Personalien nimmt die Polizei, anders als bei den übrigen 100 Akivisten, nicht auf: „Wir wissen ja, wer sie ist.“ Ob sie diese Erfahrung schon anderswo gemacht habe? Sie schweigt mit einem Lächeln im Mundwinkel”

The data from 2022 is stark, however you look at it. Whether you view the raw figures, or see another red line added to the climate stripes, the message is clear. Excess heat is building up across the planet at a rate unprecedented in the history of humanity.

This should be a cause for alarm, but not alarmism. 2022 was hot, but when you realise that those 12 months will likely be one of the coolest years of the rest of our lives, I think we will regret not having acted sooner on these warnings.

Elon Musk has said Tesla’s problematic autopilot features are “really the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money or worth basically zero.”
