A moving 24 hours in Warsaw. First, we launched 🚀 our new report for the Organization for Security & Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which provides a new framework and practical guidance for monitoring and recording acts of online violence against female journalists, recognising them as human rights violations. We heard powerful testimonies from Latvian, Polish and Tajikistani journalists in the process. You can read & watch here: https://www.osce.org/representative-on-freedom-of-media/554272
OSCE Media Freedom Representative launches new guidelines for monitoring online violence against female journalists

WARSAW 4 October 2023 – Today, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro launched the new Guidelines for monitoring online violence against female journalists at the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference.

PERSONAL NEWS 🗞️: Proud to have been appointed Professor of Journalism @ City, University of London - the UK’s 🇬🇧 top journalism school. I take up the role in September on a part time basis while continuing to lead research for the International Center for Journalists. So, I’ll be bridging the best of both worlds!

Looking forward to returning to the classroom and collaborating on high impact research and policy development projects with excellent new colleagues!

Today, the Philippine Court of Tax Appeals acquitted Maria Ressa & her news outlet Rappler of four tax evasion charges, erasing 34 years off the potential century-long prison sentence that the 'pint-sized dictator slayer' faces in connection with a slew of State-prosecuted cases.

So, the battle goes on - but with a little more optimism today compared to yesterday #HoldTheLine

The Crypto Wars aren’t over. Government’s are still regularly trying to undermine strong encryption.

In her latest newsletter from @Julia interviews Signal president @Mer__edith about

• how Signal limits data collection to protect privacy

• Why that privacy promise puts Signal in the cross-hairs

• Why Signal is not likely to offer interoperability soon under the new EU rules

Been five days since Twitter suspended a bunch of journalists, including me, for tweeting out factual reporting. And we're still suspended.

CNN's @donieosullivan, NYT's Ryan Mac and I can't access Twitter until we delete specific tweets that they said included "private information" but were actually just reporting.

Journalists Linette Lopez and Susan Li, who also covered Musk, are still suspended. No explanation given.

I have never seen anything so disgustingly, overtly misogynistic published in a newspaper anywhere.
More despicable even than the incitement to hatred spewing from Clarkson’s pen, is the fact that The Sun (Murdoch’s dominant tabloid in the UK) has published it. What editorial standards? What ethics?

Many of the journalists Elon suspended today on Twitter are here on #Mastodon. Please follow and boost:

Simultaneously, various Twitter accounts run by Mastodon servers have been suspended, while links to their content have been disabled on Twitter. Meanwhile, journalists, especially women, are still being attacked with impunity on Twitter in clear breach of Twitter’s policies on privacy and abuse.
The Musk social media autocracy appears to have jumped several sharks in a single policy manoeuvre (driven by self interest and anticompetitive tendencies). Highly credible journalists reporting on the topsy turvy world of Twitter have had their accounts permanently suspended for….well, we can only guess it’s something to do with covering Musk’s suspension of another account on the grounds it doxxed him https://amp.theguardian.com/technology/2022/dec/15/twitter-suspends-accounts-journalists-musk
