Purple hyacinth orchid (Dipodium punctatum) at Mystery Bay, NSW. Only one plant out and only just starting to flower in late February near the ocean. I usually see this species flowering nearby from late November - this is probably the latest flowering I have seen (although it can apparently flower into March at some locations).

A red stencil of a hand pressed against the wall of an Indonesian cave is the oldest rock art ever discovered, scientists said Jan 21, and sheds light on how humans first migrated to Australia.

The cave art dates back at least 67,800 years, according to research published in the journal Nature by a team of Indonesian and Australian archaeologists

@kimlockhartga post on upcoming solar storm boosted by @briankrebs then @stefano boosts a post from @andreabettini with a photo from the Matterhorn, so I get a picture from the Mt. Pilatus webcam to send to a Swiss friend and _he_ goes outside to get a recording and sees the aurora from his home for the first time.

I think this is how "social media" is supposed to work?

Anyway, thank you all for sharing wonder.

Article says G4 (out of 5), which is possible, but count on a G3 and be pleasantly surprised if it's greater. Please tell a friend. Every time there's been a really good chance to see the Auroras at lower latitudes for the Northern Hemisphere, or even in Southern Australia for the Aurora Australis, someone misses out and I don't want anyone to miss out on this X class solar flare with a CME actually pointed towards Earth, a perfect set-up. Professor Sam Lawler is a good account to follow for more educated discussion than I can offer: @ [email protected] (trying to keep her from getting a bunch of notifs). Please let me know of other astronomer accounts to follow, and separate the @ to also keep them from being bombarded.
