person of mystery. Once described as a "soft jittle" :3

I’ve realised that I probably never liked the technology industry. What I liked was personal computing, in all its facets - creativity, scratching your own itches, sharing and collaborating on a small scale.

There was a time when the tech industry and the personal computing space were pushing in the same direction, but I realise now that that’s probably not been the case for a while. They’re now even directly sabotaging personal computing in favour of big tech (the RAM drought)

Given recent news. I decided to dust this thing off.

the real problem with discord that makes them truly evil is that they sell their solution as being something that provides self-determination.

when you move your community to discord, you start a what they call a "discord server."

to be clear, there is not really any such thing as a "discord server," this is just marketing terminology for group functionality.

they call it a discord "server" on purpose: they want to communicate the idea that you have full autonomy on your own "discord server," when in reality you are still at the mercy of discord as a service provider. this is truly evil, this goes beyond a lack of transparency to actively lying to potential users. not even Slack does this.

we must build real alternatives to these predatory services.

with the default settings, "clear", or the delete key, only makes a region transparent but doesn't delete the colour info. it can easily be retrieved

ways to fix this are:
1. uncheck "save colour values from transparent pixels" when exporting
2. put a fresh transparent layer underneath everything, its colour info (pure black) will be saved instead
3. just fill the area with a solid colour instead
3.1. or save as jpeg

my friend sent me a pic of their new galaxy s 10 and i have to say the camera hole in the screen looks really bad

Stalkers and Debt Collectors Impersonate Cops to Trick Big Telecom Into Giving Them Cell Phone Location Data

In several cases, a stalker impersonated a US Marshal and reported a fake kidnapping in order to get telecom companies to give them real-time cell phone location data.

"Does dropping (malicious) USB drives in parking lots and other places really work?"

297 samples were dropped, 290 got picked up. 135 people opened documents (HTML pinger), 54 flash drives got returned.

20% were opened within the first hour. In less than 5 hours half of the devices were used by someone.

here are some things that i feel like any sort of discord-killer *needs*. these aren't the list of 'stuff i want', this is a list of 'people won't migrate to it unless it does this'

- custom emoji and/or stickers
- avatars
- mobile support and persistent presence (i.e., don't be IRC)
- decent admin tools
- integrated voice chat (not quite as important as the other ones)
