Yeah y'all -- I don't WANT this to be true --I think I'm coming around to the idea that conversation and online discourse is just *better* (in terms of general world utility) on places like Twitter as opposed to here.

Analagous to how roses grow in poop and dirt.

@IveyJanette

RIP

and also but

never there has been a more "Wait, he was still ALIVE?" type of person for me

Every social media platform I'm on (Twitter, Threads, Bluesky) I'm seeing a very necessary and solid level of tough-but-important conversations and fights. about the clashes between (Far?) Leftism and real Black folks who actually participate in politics*

Except here. Same ol same ol do-nothing far-left type stuff except also WITHOUT the "good but ugly" fights

(*Yes, I'm aware I'm being harsh here, but I don't have better terminology and its important)

@intelgraphy

Definitely bringing up important issues, but not so sure on this sentiment? Feels a little condescending?

We've got disparate issues here under the AI blanket, and not sure that AI isn't a bit of a boogeyman here.

Everything you've mentioned is, to an extent, a problem, but also AI isn't going away and I see some of us at the forefront as well.

@venitamathias

um

so

like

i'm hoping this isn't the very very very very stupid thing of the writers of the show just being REALISTIC + viewers having weak sensibilities

but i'm not optimistic because that's sure as heck what it sounds like

@muiren

Thats a lot of big words, and I do understand them, but the older I get the less value I see in ANY of this class solidarity stuff. Leftism/socialism/communism blah blah blah.

The only people actually *doing anything* in this space are 1) very clever and working through and around the system and 2) forever doomed to be called out in the stupidest of ways

shouts out to boots riley, going through it now

@wjmaggos @benroyce

Nailed it. Look we can do theory all day, but absolutely and easily the worst behavior I've ever **personally** experienced, e.g. people looking me up, questioning my identity, etc while online

was HERE ON MASTODON, not the other places, by (other Black, fwiw) people getting personal, while trying do me and my reasonable objections down ...in the name of "preventing bigotry" in the way mentioned here.

You really do become what you hate.

#blackmastodon #blackfedi

@muiren

At the risk of whatever, this is why "Leftism" is -- not always, but very often -- a *waste of time* for many many many Black folks in this country.

If you're in those spaces, you will always be fighting two fights. Props if you care to do it, but -- and this is a real question one has to ask -- what are they getting done? If anything?

@benroyce @jrm4

my position is that servers should be able to limit their membership any way they wish. but the norm should be that servers federate with other servers unless that server allows their users to harass users on other servers. basically unwanted tagging.

both of these policies are about the betterment of the network and promoting growth. avoiding harassment is obvious, but one should also have the sense that they can join the network as a user or server and reach almost everyone.

@benroyce @wjmaggos

you keep doing the thing of presuming that you, or whoever, can be a very accurate barometer for "bigotry"

I have already seen this not work here, even under a policy like the one you put here. Sounds great in theory, harder in practice
